See, this is why I normally don't need to do research specifically for a book. I'm sitting here working on Anima's Ghost and watching Hell's Kitchen with my mom while we eat junk food...and suddenly state birds pop up in my mind and I decide to look them up. Because that's totally a logical thing to do right now xD
PS Our country's filled with a bunch of copycats. 7 states have Cardinals as their state bird (Illinois was the first in '29), 3 have robins, and 6 have Western Meadowlarks. And there are a bunch of other pairs of states that have the same bird.
